Thanksgiving: A Warning

With renewed calls to make America a theocracy, it’s worth looking back at a time when the colonies came much closer and Old Testament law was enforced. The Pilgrims didn’t come to build democracy. They came to build a theocracy, and it collapsed in violent conflict -not just with Native nations but with dissenters. Quakers were whipped and branded, had their ears cut off and their tongues burned. It’s a warning worth revisiting as some leaders now call for a Christian theocracy. Thanksgiving is the one moment in that story where cooperation kept people alive.
